Becoming a follower of Jesus
People everywhere long for purpose, peace and social justice, for a sense of well-being and significance. We are all looking for that ‘something’ that will make our lives that much better. Despite life sometimes being filled with turmoil and suffering, or being filled with love and contentment, there are times when we all sense that there must be more to life than what we see and experience. There must be something or someone beyond us that guides us to make sense of ourselves and show us who we truly are. So, we all search for answers perhaps not realizing that it is God who is drawing us to himself.
This may be a new idea for you, but God is looking for you!
This is perhaps why you are reading this right now. Jesus taught that: No one can come to me (Jesus) unless the Father who sent me (Jesus) draws him. And I (Jesus) will raise him up on the last day (life after death) (John 6:44)
God is searching for you.
However, you may have asked: Why does it matter to God what happens to me? Why should God care about me? God not only designed you, but he loves you and he has made the way possible for you to know Him and live forever in relationship with Him.
Only God can save you
Jesus once told this to a Jewish religious leader: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son… Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them (John 3:16-18, 35).
Becoming a follower of Jesus
God by nature is Holy and only those who are pure and without sin can know Him. For a person to meet God’s high standard and expectations is impossible. There is no way that any of us can become righteous by our own efforts. This is why only God can save you. It is impossible to save yourself. Becoming a follower of Jesus Christ means that by faith you first believe that God has given His Only Son to suffer and die in your place. It is Jesus who took upon himself the consequences of your sinfulness, and your debt to God. When Jesus died, he died for your sin, legally wiping away your sin debt to God. When Jesus rose to life again, he rose that you may be forgiven and live in true harmony with God.
To begin this new life, you need to acknowledge your sinfulness before God, turn away from this behaviour, and then both believe and receive Jesus Christ as your saviour. You can do this right now by surrendering and submitting your life to God through Jesus Christ. If you are sincere and are prepared to become a follower of Jesus, then here is what you can say to God, right now:
“O God, I believe that you sent your Son to deal with all my sins. Please forgive my sins on account of Jesus’ death on the cross. Receive me now as your child and fill me with the Holy Spirit so I can live a new life with you. Amen!”

When you pray to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, the Bible says that you have become a son or daughter of God, and that you have been born again by the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-8). To grow in your new life with God, it is essential to read the Bible and spend time listening and receiving God’s life lessons as well as worshipping God in prayer.
